03 Sep Ukrainian Book Donation
Like many others, I have been following the work that local communities are doing nationwide to help newly arrived Ukrainian refugees. And I decided to contact my own local community team, the Ukrainian Kilkenny Response Team to see how I could go about donating some copies of my book. I also thought it would be a good idea to contact other local authors and ask if they wanted to donate some books also.
Luckily everyone I approached agreed and I was delighted to gather and hand over children’s books from authors Lizzy Shortall with her book ‘Joy’s Playground’, Brendan Bolger with ‘ Trouble on Tigg’s Farm’, Helena Duggan with her ‘Perfect’ and ‘Light Thief’series, Frank Salmon with his ‘Chronicles of Hamalot’ book and Donal Cadagan with his ‘ We are Kilkenny Cats’ and ‘About Kilkenny’books were donated.
The books will out go to the Fr McGrath Family Resource Centre, Newpark Family Resource Centre and Centres in Thomastown and Freshford. Over 130 newly arrived Ukrainian families can access them there. As there is a wide range of English language abilities and ages amongst the families, it is nice to have a range of different children’s books for them all.
Thanks to the Kilkenny People for doing an article on the book donation and highlighting the important work done by the Kilkenny LEADER Partnership (KLP) who work as part of the Ukrainian Kilkenny Response Team. They also provide English classes and support children into school places, offer Adult Guidance advice, have drop in centre for teenagers and parents and work with Kilkenny Men’s Shed who are currently mending donated bikes for the Ukrainian Families.
